Scrap Time - Ep. 771 - Creative Foundations by Vicki Boutin

Today I am showing you the book Creative Foundations by Vicki Boutin and trying out one of the techniques from the book! The book has 40 tutorials for using Mixed Media on your Scrapbook Layouts and projects!

I decided to try out the Gesso technique. First you apply a layer of Gesso to your surface. I like to use the Studio Gesso by Claudine Hellmuth. Then you stamp into your Gesso. Above I used the Luscious Ledger stamp from Hero Arts. Then you let it dry completely. Now you are ready to apply your mediums. The book suggests you start by rubbing in Distress Inks into the stamped areas. I used Lemonade from the Tim Holtz Spring Distress Ink collection. The Distress Ink will rub off the Gesso, so this is to get into the crevices. Now you apply paint over top. You want to keep it thin, so the texture underneath shows through. I used Eco Green Paints and applied them with a make up sponge. Keep applying your paint until you are happy with the finished product!

Here is a close up of the sample I made in the video. This time I use the Sweet Threads Antique stamp from Hero Arts.

This is an Art Journal page I made. I used a variety of texture stamps on the background. Then I stamped the ‘tweets’ using Archival Inks and the Smitty’s ABCs stamp set by Lawn Fawn Stamps and a Technique Tuesday alphabet set. The bird and speech bubbles are both Lifestyle Craft dies. The title was made using American Crafts Thickers.

FYI – Tim Holtz has released the Summer Collection of the Distress Inks and the colours look beautiful!! They are available now through Simon Says Stamp!

The links take you to Simon Says Stamp and Scrapbook.com. Both sites are affiliates of Scrap Time and when you use our links to shop there, Scrap Time receives a percentage of the sale and we appreciate your support!

If you are interested in purchasing Creative Foundations it is available through Amazon! Here is the Canadian Link:

Looks like an interesting book! I love the idea of stamping into the Gesso. I may have to give this a try, well once I get my craft room back in order that is! Thanks!

You can buy ‘journals’ at Art Supply stores. I use a Watercolour paper book, but when working with Gesso you can use most types of papers. You may want to try a Mixed Media Book. The paper is a nice weight.

Hi Christine. I am new to using Gesso. What do you use to apply the Gesso – paintbrush, sponge or something else? Thanks for your fabulous ideas and inspiration!

Gesso is just a thicker acrylic paint. You can apply it using any of those items. I usually use a brush or a card.
