Ep. 585 – A Tour of my Scrap Room – January 2011

Looking from the Hallway

It has been 2 years since my last tour and although a couple things have stayed the same, a lot has changed!! This is a long video – almost 25 minutes, but I have tried to give you a lot of storage ideas throughout the video!! To start, I have the Billy Bookcases and the Expedit Bookcases from Ikea. I love the Expedit units since they are about 13″ wide, they will hold various scrapping supplies!

Sitting on the couch

Here is the other side of the room.

The Hallway

And this is our “Hallway”. We live in a Townhouse Downtown Toronto so I have learned to use every bit of space!!

My Scrap Room

I still love the Ribbon Ring system for my ribbons!! It makes it easy to find a piece of ribbon!

My Scrap Room

I use the CD boxes from Ikea to store everything!! Stamps, dies, embossing folders, paints, ink pads, 6″x6″ paper pads, sewing supplies, odds and ends, Glimmer Mists, journalling supplies, gems, iTop accessories, iRock and accessories, Letterpress supplies and more! You can fit 4 across a Billy Bookcase or 2 within an Expedit cube.

My Scrap Room

I forgot to mention in the video how I got the shelves that divide the cube. That is originally the set that divides the cube into 4. Mark re-worked the pieces to make this simple shelf, dividing the cube in 2! It has allowed me to store almost twice as much stuff!!

My Scrap Room

These paper boxes from Ikea are fabulous as well! I use them to store my punches, Washi Tape, wooden stamps, Ten Seconds Studio metal and moulds, embossing powders and glitter, tools, Chip Art Tools, adhesives, paints, alcohol inks, stickles and Letterpress stuff!

My Scrap Room

I store my unmounted rubber stamps in these Bella Boxes from Stamping Bella! The stamps stick to the sheets and if one was to fall off, it is still trapped in the box. (I couldn’t find the boxes on the Bella site. You can email them to see if they still sell them)

My Scrap Room

My buttons are stored in the Making Memories organizer. I bought it at a 2nd hand sale for $5.

My Scrap Room

All my small embellishments – brads, crystals, metal embellishments, etc. – are stored in these bead boxes I got at Michael’s a few years back for $2 each.

My Scrap Room

I still love my Clip-It-Up!! It makes it really easy to see what you have!!

My Scrap Room

I have 1 Iris Cart left for some paper and my circle cutter.

My Scrap Room

I still love my Making Memories Carousel Organizer!! Makes it easy to have everything at your fingertips!

My Scrap Room

I bought this tray at the ROM gift shop. Perfect for all the loose items I keep out.

My Scrap Room

And no matter how much organizing I do, I still have a bin of ribbon. My last bin to try and hang up all the ribbon. But I keep running out of the ribbon holders!

Well, I hope you make it through the whole video!! If you have any questions or comments leave them here on the blog and I will get back to you!!

Scrap Time – Ep. 585 – A Tour of my Scrap Room – January 2011 from Mark Giles on Vimeo.

On the next episode I am showing you how to take this years Christmas Cards and turn them into next years tags!!

Thanks for watching!

Where did you get the clear containers the material was in on the bottom of the expedit? Is that Ikea also? Your room is great. Wish mine looked like that.

The Magnetic Binders are from Quickutz – now Lifestyle Crafts. However, I know that a LSS has been trying to get them in for months now. SO I do not know when they will be available again. I really need to get some more!!

Hi Christine! Thanks for the tour. I love seeing how you organized everything. After watching, I ran to my craft room and emptied my Stampin’ Up boxes and put my tear-drop-shaped Memento and Versa Magic inks into them. What a great idea! I look forward to each and every one of your videos. Thank you (and Mark and Gemma too) for your hard work!

OMG! I’m speechless! Have you ever considered unmounting your wood mounted stamps to save space? Also, do you put containers in those CD cases to divide your stuff to make it easier?!

    • Christine
      Posted January 8, 2011 at 10:54 am | Permalink

I unmounted my SU! stamps in the past, but I like wood mounted stamps. And these stamps are quite expensive, so I leave them the way they are. I don’t have that many wood mounted stamps.

I don’t have dividers in my cases, but the items are pretty much already divided into categories or themes. Although it looks like a lot, I actually know where most things are.

Thank you for the tour and sharing all your storage solutions. You are awesome. I have the Expedit but it always looks messy. I like how you organized your stuff using the boxes and how your hubby was able to divide the large cube in half…genius. I was always frustrated that I was wasting space. I now have a new “honey do” item for my hubby. Thanks again for sharing your ideas with us. Happy New Year!

Loved it. I am so happy to see that it is possible to be organized and functional in a small area. I have a corner of our living room to use. One thing I did not notice a lot of was paper. I have so much paper in various sizes, DCWV and other collections in 12 x 12 especially but also lots of 8 x 8 and my plain cardstock and 8-1/2 x 11 too. Where do you keep all of yours? I know you showed a section on one of the shelves but that can’t really be all of your paper! Thanks again for showing us your creative space.

    • Christine
      Posted January 8, 2011 at 2:07 pm | Permalink

I showed all my paper. I have my 12×12 cardstock and 8×8 paper pads on my shelf. My 6×6 paper pads in 2 CD holders. My 8 1/2×11 cardstock on another shelf. Some paper and cardstock in my Iris cart. And some more paper in my folders beside the table. I receive so much paper that once I use it for an episode of Scrap Time all my scraps get put in a bag and shipped off to Gemma’s school. All the full sheets get put aside for 2nd Hand sales and/or contests. I only keep specific paper that I want to use for cards or some layouts.

      • Posted January 8, 2011 at 3:25 pm | Permalink

That’s the secret. Maybe if I had less paper, it would be easier for me to actually create sometimes! I can spend so much time looking for that “right” piece of paper that I run out of actual scrap-time! Thanks for that.

    Hi Christine,
I loved the tour of your scrap room. I also have my scrap room in our family room. I am very lucky because it is 18 X 18 feet. I invested in the Scrap n Cube furniture. I love it and I am awaiting the delivery of my craft cart within the next month. I am so excited. You are very organized with your collections, just like me. My scrap buddies are always amazed how I can remember where everything is. Problem is, I think I spend more time shopping and organizing, than scrapbooking. But that is my New Years Resolution, to scrap more. I was surpised to see how much die cutting equipment you have. I could never justify the high cost of some of the dies for only getting one image. I do however love my Cricut Expression and I also have a Pazzles Inspiration. And as you know these are not cheap either. My question for you today is……I noticed you have a large supply of Copic Markers. Don’t you have problems with them drying out on the one end that is at the top? I know they sell their own storage system, which I see you use. But I thought you are supposed to store those double ended markers on their side, so they don’t dry out. You’ll have to let us know when you start using your spray system. I’m so Jealous. Love your work and all your shows. Keep up the good work. It seems like you just reached episode 500 and now your almost at 600. Time is going way too fast.

Thanks for the comment. Copic Markers have an air tight seal so you can store them horizontally or vertically. I have never had any of my Copics Dry out.

I am hoping to use my air brush system tomorrow or Monday on a book I need to do. I will do a review of it hopefully in February.

And yes, dies are expensive, but I do get a discount on them since I used to work at a LSS, which is now an online store. But I love die cutting. And although I have Digital Cutting systems I still love my manual dies. I also used to sell my cards, so I would earn money back on them. And all my nestablities and Cookie Cutter dies I use over and over again. I find manual die cutting to be quicker and easier for me, that setting up my digital machines. But it all comes down to what works for you!

    Hi Christine…
LOVED the scrap room tour…I’ll have to watch it again – you covered so much!! I love some of the organization ideas you’ve used… You are SO LUCKY to have such a wonderful husband!! I just kept thinking as I watched the video – my husband would kill me if I started to take over our family room!! The other night I was scrapbooking and he came into my room and looked at my Clip it Up and said “WOW, you sure have a lot of stickers.” I thought to myself…oh honey – if you only knew!! Most of my stash is in cabinets and drawers so he has NO idea. I could never give a tour with him filming…he’d be aghast!! Anyhow- really enjoyed the video and you sharing your creativity and a piece of your life.
Question – you seem to have a bunch of die cutters. I have a Cricut which I use quite a bit, but am looking at a manual machine because I’d like to be able to emboss and use some of Tim Holtz’s fabulous dies. I saw your video on the Grand Calibre and think that might be the one for me. I believe all machines can use competitor’s dies…am I right? Any advice from you having used all of the different machines??

    • Christine
      Posted January 9, 2011 at 11:53 am | Permalink

      Thanks for the comment.

If you want to use Tim’s dies I would get the Sizzix Big Shot, or if you have the money Tim’s Vagabond. The Big Shot will do all manufacturer’s dies, but I find cuts the Bigz dies the easiest. The Grand Calibur does not cut Bigz dies. The opening isn’t big enough.

      Hope that Helps!!

Gorgeous space. I used to live in T.O. You are so right about having to make use of space! We do the futon in the living room so we can have 8×8 office & stamp rooms, so it’s great to see your clever solutions. Brilliant how you have the lids off but on the bottom, and your hand-carved stamp is SO stunning.
